Role & Responsibilites

Research, UI Design, Testing, Prototyping, Co-ordinating with developers, Pitching to Stakeholder

Context

Primarily I was one of UX designers for this project, it had a short deadline and a PRD was handed over from the first week given but I decided to squeeze some extra hours for research so I could get insights before going straight to creating prototypes. My contributions to the project was focused on some of the screens of the web app for the MVP.

Background story

Between 2016 - 2020, Nigeria had a high influx of online influencers and online businesses. Social media apps have given people the opportunity to reach a wide range of audiences like never before. People are more active online and they use these platforms to advertise their goods and services and create online content.

Although, some new problems have arisen such as creating online content seamlessly and monitoring the engagements easily.

There was a need to create an all-in-one place platform for creating and scheduling posts to social media platforms seamlessly.

The Proposed timeline for this project was 4 - 6 weeks. Visit Live Site

The goal
1.) Create a product-market fit and get volunteers to test the product

2.) Increase customer acquistion and drive growth
User Research

I had the opportunity to meet some influencers and digital marketers on Twitter. I was able to book phone interviews with them to gain insights into their pain points and needs. It turned out that using social media to run their business was their major source of income but using it efficiently took a lot more work from them. They tried other options to make the process a bit painless but were not impressed due to the high cost of subscription and poor ease of use.

They wanted something affordable, better, and easy to use since they weren’t so tech-savvy.

Iterations

An Overhaul was done to the designs after receiving negative feedback during the testing session from some of our potential users regarding the aesthetics and usability of the screens. I learned a lot by carefully studying other products so as to match an average user’s mental model of other products with ours.

The designs on the left had major usability problems from inconsistent colors, icons, e.t.c. Also, there were some redundant elements that weren’t tied to the business goal and also left room for confusion for users.

The new iterations of the designs on the right had a better visual feel. A style guide was was put in place to ensure consistency and easy handoff to developers. Essential use cases like empty states and edge cases were properly documented.

Usability Testing

To validate assumptions made during the iteration of the designs. The designs were tested among three participants who were part of our user base and that led to further iteration on one of the screens before handing off to developers for implementation.

The new iteration of this design screen on the left raised some questions like “is this clickable?” “Does a dropdown or modal window appears after clicking on it?”. I realized that this element had to be changed to avoid confusion.

The screen was improved by changing the filter icon to a text and using a lighter shade of gray color to indicate unclickable and to direct user’s attention to the elements on the right for users to interact with it.

My Learnings

This was my first UX project and yet the most exciting project I have worked on. I learned so much from this project such as essential use cases to consider when building a product, communicating well with stakeholders and other people in the team, and as well as properly handing off design assets for developers to implement.

I also learned the importance of involving developers early during the discovery phase in order to allow room for better ideas and understand the technical feasibility of the solution.

Next steps

We planned to work on the Analytics feature that will be useful for our potential users to monitor the engagement of their posts, and add more social media accounts for users to select like Pinterest, Instagram, e.t.c. Introduce a native mobile app for platforms like Android and IOS for version 2.
